Additional Resources for Credential Programs

The following links and forms have been provided to help you locate information you'll need during the course of your credential program:

CSET/SSAT
All teacher candidates are required to fulfill the subject matter competency requirement prior to being eligible for student teaching. This website has registration information for the required exams, as well as sample questions that may be helpful when studying.

CBEST
The California Basic Educational Skills Test is required for all teaching and services credentials prior to beginning any type of fieldwork. This website has registration information for candidates.

RICA
The Reading Instruction Competency Assessment is required for candidates pursuing their initial teaching credential in the areas of Multiple Subjects or Education Specialist. Verification of passing scores for this exam is required prior to applying for credential. This website contains registration information.

CL-469 Request Form
Some schools employ teachers with an Emergency Long Term Substitute Permit if the teacher has not yet obtained a California teaching credential. This permit is valid for one year, in which the candidate must make progress in a teaching credential program. To renew this permit, the holder must obtain a CL-469 form from a National University CCTC authorized signer. To be eligible for this form, candidates must be enrolled in the appropriate credential program, and have completed at least nine-quarter units toward the appropriate teaching credential. The CL-469 Request Form lists more specific requirements for this document.

Student Teaching Handbook
The Student Teaching Handbook describes National University policies and procedures for student teaching. All student teachers should have this handbook available for reference prior to student teaching.

Student Teaching Equivalency Application
Multiple and Single subject teacher candidates, who have at least one full year of teaching experience in the appropriate subject area, may qualify to have nine weeks of the eighteen week student teaching requirement waived with this equivalent experience. The Student Teaching Equivalency Application explains in detail what documentation is needed to verify appropriate experience. When the form is completed, candidates may return it to the local Faculty Field Experience Coordinator or local Placement Specialist for processing. (Note: This option is not available to students in the Dual Special Education and Multiple/Single Subject teaching credential program, as these student teachers only participate in nine weeks of Special Education student teaching and nine weeks of student teaching in a Multiple/Single Subject setting.)

Experience with Emergent Readers Application
All Multiple Subject teaching credential candidates are required to participate in a teaching experience with emergent readers (typically grades K-2). Candidates who have at least four weeks of experience teaching emergent readers may qualify to be granted equivalency and therefore may remain in an upper grade level to complete their Multiple Subject student teaching experience.

Qualified students are required to complete this form, supply a copy of their contract or employment verification, and a copy of an evaluation from an administrator. This documentation should be submitted to the Faculty Field Experience Coordinator at the local academic center, prior to student teaching. If approved, the student will be required to complete only nine weeks of student teaching in a multiple or single subject setting. This equivalency application is not applicable to students in the Dual Education Specialist/Multiple or Single Subject credential program.

Emergent Reader Experience Application
Students seeking a Multiple Subject teaching credential are required to have experience teaching emergent readers (typically grades K-2). If a student has had sufficient experience teaching emergent readers (at least four weeks), he/she may complete this application and supply documentation of this experience for review by the local Faculty Field Experience Coordinator. If this experience is accepted as equivalent, the student may complete the entire student teaching requirement in an upper grade level.

Challenge Exam Instructions
Many teacher credential candidates are required to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in educational technology prior to being granted a credential. Many students complete this requirement by university coursework. If a student feels they have sufficient computer knowledge prior to taking this coursework, he/she may take the Challenge Exam to demonstrate their knowledge. This exam is graded by National University faculty. If the student passes a Challenge Exam, he/she will not be required to complete the equivalent course. A Challenge Exam is offered for equivalency to National University's EDT608 or EDT655.
