National University to Offer Bachelor's of Science in Nursing with RN Licensure in Fresno
Degree offered to help address critical nursing shortage in San Joaquin Valley
September 30, 2008
Fresno, Calif. – National University, the second-largest, private, nonprofit institution of higher education in California, announced today that it will be offering a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing with RN Licensure at its Fresno campus beginning this November.
The National University Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing with RN Licensure will be one of only a handful of university programs offered in the Fresno area.
“The healthcare industry in the state of California is suffering due to a shortage of qualified nurses and the lack of educational programs and resources available to effectively meet this demand,” said Michael Lacourse, Dean of the School of Health and Human Services at National University. “By offering a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing with RN Licensure in Fresno, National University is in a position to address the shortage of nurses in the San Joaquin Valley.”
According to a recent study by the University of California, San Francisco and the Public Policy Institute of California, the state has a tremendous shortage of registered nurses and needs to increase the supply to keep pace with the rapid growth of California’s population. Currently, RN programs throughout the central San Joaquin Valley are impacted and have been unable to meet the demand.
Classes for the National University nursing program have no current waiting list. With National University’s flexible one-course-per-month format, the Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing is designed to take three to four years to complete if the student has no transfer units, and two years or less to complete if the student is transferring from an accredited college.
National University is currently pursuing formal agreements with Fresno hospitals for the nursing degree’s clinical component.
Dr. Jayne Moore will lead the nursing program at National University’s Fresno campus. Dr. Moore has extensive experience in nursing education, as well as in-depth knowledge and hands-on expertise in the nursing profession. Dr. Moore holds a B.S. and M.A. in Nursing and also has a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Wyoming.
