PHS102 Survey of Physical Science

Lead Faculty: Dr. Nataliya V. Serdyukova

Course Description

This course is an introduction to the basic principles and general concepts of the physical sciences. Physical science is about the rules of the physical world: physics, chemistry, geology, and astronomy. The emphasis is on the basic concepts of each of these disciplines. Throughout the course, practical applications are made to everyday life through the planning and performing of experiments. Topics include: the scientific method; laws of motion; energy; electricity and magnetism; heat; waves (sound and light); the atom; chemical bonds in molecules, solids, and liquids; chemical reactions; organic and inorganic chemistry; space and time; evolution of the universe.

Course Goals:
This is a general education course for non-technical majors. Its overall purpose is to introduce students to the major themes of the physical sciences, an overview of the major concepts of physics and chemistry. As part of this large goal, students will be able to:
· Understand and appreciate the complex interactions of the physical world.
· Discuss the scientific method of objective investigation and inquiry.
· Understand the structure of matter, chemical reactions, and bonding.
· Describe the basic physical laws of mechanics, electricity and magnetism, heat transfer, and waves.
· Illustrate these physical concepts through simple laboratory experiments.
