Personal Information
Dr. Alan Henderson has been involved in public health for the past thirty-five years, principally as a faculty member and a department chair at California State University, Long Beach, Saint Louis University School of Public Health, Southern Illinois University, and Santa Monica College. Dr. Henderson's contributions to public health include serving as project director for the Role Delineation Project, funded by the US Public Health Service which resulted in a credentialing system for health education, obtaining accreditation of graduate public health programs at Saint Louis University and California State University, Long Beach, developing joint degree graduate programs between public health, nursing, and social work.
Dr. Henderson has been a long time volunteer for the American Cancer Society and served as the California Division's president. He has received advocacy efforts on behalf of the Society, and the Saint George Medal, the highest honor bestowed on a volunteer. Dr. Henderson has been actively engaged in tobacco control, starting with Proposition 99 in 1988. He and a colleague were instrumental in creating oversight committees for the state and local tobacco control agencies. He has served as chair of the Long Beach Smoke Free Coalition.
As President of the American Cancer Society, he had led the Society's efforts to pass Proposition 10, which added fifty cents to the tobacco tax to support children's health and development. He served on the scientific advisory committee of the Tobacco Related Disease Research Program for six years as representative of the California Department of Education. He currently serves on the statewide Tobacco Education and Research Oversight Committee which oversees the state departments of public health and education as well as the tobacco research program run by the University of California Office of the President. In this capacity, Dr. Henderson was appointed by Governor Gray Davis and subsequently reappointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Dr. Henderson has made numerous scholarly presentations and journal publications. He has authored three books.
