Students enrolled in National University’s School of Health and Human Services new Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program will benefit from the experience and leadership of Dr. Terry L. Schmidt.
Dr. Schmidt is lead faculty for the MHA program, and plays a key role in preparing graduates for entry level and middle management roles in healthcare organizations. He arrived at National University in the fall of 2008 with the challenge to implement new curricula which meet the current and future requirements of the region’s private and public healthcare institutions.
Originally from Washington, DC, Dr. Schmidt brings a unique combination of management, public policy and academic credentials to his position. He has served as Assistant Director of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston, SC); as Assistant Director for the American Medical Association’s Department of Government Relations; and as Adjunct Professor in the Graduate School of Public Health at San Diego State University.
His career benchmarks include representing in Washington, DC the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Society of Nuclear Medicine, the American Ambulance Association, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, to name a few. Added to this list are representing the United States in counter-terrorism training in Uruguay, managing multiple physician practices, negotiating over one hundred hospital physician contracts, holding academic appointments at several universities, and ameliorating reimbursement for providers with Medicare and other health insurers.
He holds a Doctor of Health Administration (DrHA) from the Medical University of South Carolina and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the George Washington University.
He holds professional membership with the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and the American College of Medical Practice Executives (ACMPE); is a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), and is a Certified Medical Practice Executive (CPME). His research interests are in physician reimbursement and healthcare reform. His teaching focus is to provide students opportunities to meld academic training with real life practicum.
Of special note are the acclaimed reviews given by students regarding Dr. Schmidt’s “White Coat” assignments, which takes his graduate student from the classroom into the healthcare arena.for practicums and mentoring.
His passion is to make the curricula real and exciting for his students, enhancing their overall appreciation for health care management and delivering exceptional professionals into key leadership positions throughout the region.
On a personal note, Dr. Schmidt is a recent graduate of the Grossmont Police Academy (Level III) and enjoys being surrounded by his daughter (Christie) and son (Terry II) and their families.
