Affiliation will provide National's diverse student population with access to doctoral degree

La Jolla, Calif. – July 22, 2008 – The National University System today announced that Pleasant Hill, Calif. based John F. Kennedy University will become the newest affiliate of the National University System. The affiliation will provide National University System students access to a doctoral degree through JFK University's Doctorate in Psychology (PsyD).

"The addition of John F. Kennedy University will serve to broaden the scope of educational opportunities available to all of the students of the National University System," said Dr. Jerry C. Lee, Chancellor of the National University System. "The National University System and JFK University share a common mission – providing access to a quality education that is convenient and available to everyone. JFK University will be an important and welcome addition to the National University System."

JFK University consists of six schools: Education and Liberal Arts, Holistic Studies, Law, Management, the Graduate School of Professional Psychology, and the School of Continuing Education. Students can choose from undergraduate completion, doctorate, and graduate degrees, teaching credentials, certificates and continuing education programs. Similar to National University, JFK University has a format that allows students to earn a degree while balancing work and family commitments.

The National University System was established in 2001 to meet the emerging demands for education in the 21st Century. In addition to the pending affiliation of JFK University, the affiliates of the National University System are: National University, National Polytechnic College of Science; Spectrum Pacific Learning Company LLC; National University Virtual High School; National University Academy of Health Sciences, WestMed College; and National University International.

As an affiliate of the National University System, JFK University will retain its name, identity, and standing as an independent fully-accredited university, and its commitment to its core mission, vision, and values. JFK University's affiliation with the National University System will significantly strengthen the University's resources, and provide a strong foundation for long-term future at its Pleasant Hill main campus and other locations. National University, the flagship institution of the National University System, has an endowment which ranks among the 200 largest college and university endowments in the United States.

The National University System's affiliation with JFK University was approved unanimously by the National University System Board of Trustees on July 17. The Board of Regents at JFK University also has approved the affiliation. Final approval by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the regional body which accredits both institutions, is required before the affiliation can be completed.

"For 44 years, JFK University has given students an innovative education that serves to advance the well-being of our diverse local and global communities," said JFK University President Dr. Steven Stargardter. "The National University System shares this educational vision. By working within and leveraging its framework, JFK University's ability to educate and inspire positive change will be strengthened."
