Duncan Andrew Campbell grew up in Africa, Canada and the United Kingdom. He completed his B.A. (Hons) at Queen's University, his M.A. at the University of Toronto and read history for a Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge. Previously he taught at the University of Wales Swansea (now Swansea University) and presently teaches at National University in San Diego, California where he is a professor of history.
