FRESNO, CALIF. – National University, the second-largest private, nonprofit institution of higher education in California, announced today the opening of the National University Golf Academy at its campus in Fresno. Mike Springer, a local professional golfer who played on the PGA and Nationwide tours, will serve as the Director of Instruction at the Fresno campus.
The National University Golf Academy offers innovative golf programs that combine academics with golf instruction at the high school, associate’s and bachelor’s levels. The National University Golf Academy also features a swing lab, which utilizes cutting-edge technology to provide golf swing analysis and instruction to help students and instructors improve their game.
Springer is one of the most successful professional golfers in Fresno-area history. He is a two-time PGA Tour Champion who has over 17 years of professional playing experience and collected more than $3 million in PGA Tour earnings. He has remained active in the golf community, owning his own custom club fitting company and instructing golf in Central California.
In addition to Springer, the Academy is distinguished by its expert academic leadership. Dr. Charles “Mac” Powell, a Class “A” member of the Professional Golfer’s Association, is the Dean of the Academy.
The National University Golf Academy’s state-of-the-art swing lab consists of high-speed cameras and a computer system that renders a three-dimensional animation of a golfer’s swing, employing the same motion-capture software used by the TaylorMade Performance Lab. In an effort to increase the technology available to golf students and instructors in Central Valley, the Academy is opening the lab to all students and teachers in the region.
The National University Golf Academy offers a bachelor’s in sport psychology, an associate’s degree with a concentration in professional golf management, and certificates in professional golf management and advanced golf management. National University’s bachelor’s degree in sport psychology is the only one of its kind in the region that can be completed either onsite or entirely online. Classes begin in September and all of the golf programs and certificates at the National University Golf Academy are eligible for financial aid.
The Fresno location will be the Golf Academy’s second after the successful launch of the Academy’s inaugural campus in Carlsbad, California in September 2009.
