Ms. Gwen Stowers To Conduct Research in Cochabamba, Bolivia
La Jolla, Calif. – Ms. Gwen Stowers, an associate professor in the Teacher Education Department of National University’s School of Education, has been awarded a 2006-2007 Fulbright Scholar grant.
Through the grant, Ms. Stowers will research the topic of “Democratic Education in Bolivia” at the Indigenous University in Cochabamba, Bolivia. She began her research in October 2006 and will remain in Bolivia until April 2007.
Ms. Stowers is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who received Fulbright grants to lecture or conduct research abroad. A similar number of foreign faculty and professionals received awards to come to the United States. These current Fulbrighters joined the nearly 100,000 U.S. and foreign scholars who have participated in the program since its inception.
Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program’s purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries. Recipients of Fulbright awards – both U.S. and Foreign – are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership potential in their fields.
The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, with additional funding coming from participating governments and host institutions in the United States and abroad. The Council for International Exchange of Students (CIES) is a private, nonprofit organization that manages Fulbright Scholar exchanges. Final selections are made by the presidentially appointed J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, which also formulates policy for the program.
