One in four students at National University identified as active or prior-service military
San Diego, Calif. – Dec. 19, 2014 – National University, the second-largest private, nonprofit university in California, has been named a Top School in the 2015 Military Advanced Education Guide to Colleges & Universities. The recognition is the latest received by National University for the quality of services offered to its substantial military student population.
About one in four National University students identify as active or prior-service military, and many are drawn to National University’s one-class-per-month format and flexible options to take courses online, at military base locations or at community-based campuses. Through the University’s Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success, National University has directly served about 4,000 students in areas that include transition to campus life, retention, achievement of educational and career goals, and supporting a higher quality of life. Among the Center’s many successes is a peer-to-peer academic mentorship program. The Center is the result of a grant awarded to National University by the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE), combined with National University funding.
The University has also regularly been named a “Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs Magazine and has received previous recognitions by Military Advanced Education magazine. The University is the recipient of the prestigious Ray Ehrensberger Award for Institutional Excellence in Military Education, and its staff has been recognized for their contributions to military education through the Council of Colleges and Military Educators.
The University has also developed programs that provide military students with opportunities to transition to new careers. For example, the University recently announced the creation of the Accelerated Track for Vets to BSN (V2BSN) Project that is being launched to provide Veterans interested in nursing careers with academic and professional support through a three-year $1.05 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
The most recent recognition appears in the Military Advanced Education Guide, which is available in the December 2014 issue of Military Advanced Education magazine. It is based on results from a questionnaire of the military-supportive policies enacted at more than 600 institutions including private, public, for-profit, not-for-profit, four-year, and two-year colleges. Institutes were evaluated on their military culture, financial aid, flexibility, on-campus support and online support services.
