Los Angeles, Calif. – Robby Nadler, a senior at Beverly Hills High School, was named one of three winners in the Los Angeles area Young Writers Contest. Mr. Nadler won the nonfiction category and was a finalist in the poetry and fiction categories. All submissions were required to be original and previously unpublished.
The contest was sponsored by National University, which solicited schools throughout Los Angeles County for entries. Approximately 70 submissions were received in March and were judged in April. Winners were announced at a reception on May 14. The contest theme was “What it means to be a Californian: Identity and Culture.”
At age 17, Mr. Nadler is now both an award-winning author and published writer. He earned $150 in prize money from National University, and his winning entry will be published in University’s literary magazine, The Gnu.
“We are certainly proud of Robby,” said Beverly Hills High School Principal Dan Stepenosky. “He’s a complete renaissance kid with a lot of talent and a very bright future.” Principal Stepenosky added that Mr. Nadler is a member of the Beverly Hills High School Academic Decathlon Team, which placed first in Los Angeles County this year. He is also active in the school’s dance troupe and is currently enrolled in four advanced placement classes.
National University faculty members Colin Dickey and Karen Offitzer collaborated to introduce the literary competition to Los Angeles area youth this year. Professor Dickey teaches writing at National University’s San Bernardino academic center and Professor Offitzer teaches writing at Los Angeles and Sherman Oak centers.
