What is ACCUPLACER Next Generation Testing?

The ACCUPLACER Next Generation test is designed to assess a student’s prior learning in mathematics and provide placement guidance for faculty and staff.

Who Needs ACCUPLACER?

It is strongly recommended that students with a low incoming GPA take the ACCUPLACER math placement test as part of the admissions process.

Which Math Test Do I Need to Take?

There are three Next Gen tests to choose from (choose one).

Arithmetic” is used by students who want to request placement into MTH012A: Algebra I.

Suggestion: Student completed the following courses OR more advanced math courses greater than ten years ago.

  • Algebra 1
  • Introductory Math

Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics” (QAS) is used by students who want to request placement into MTH012A: Algebra I OR MTH012B: Algebra II.

Suggestion: Student completed the following courses OR more advanced math courses greater than five years ago.

  • Algebra 2
  • Statistics
  • Geometry

Advanced Algebra and Functions” (AAF) is used by students who want to request placement into MTH012B: Algebra II OR College Level Math.

Suggestion: Student completed the following courses less than five years ago OR reports high-level skills in math otherwise acquired.

  • Calculus
  • Trigonometry
  • College Level Math

The Math ACCUPLACER test may be repeated a maximum of three (3) times

Where Can I Take the Test?

  • In the San Diego area: If you would like to complete your exam at our Spectrum Library location, please make an appointment today!
  • Not in San Diego but close to an NU campus? Contact [email protected].
  • If you are not close to an NU campus, you can have us search for a proctor at another school’s campus that may be close to you.
  • If you have a computer with a microphone and camera, you can request a voucher for an Examity virtual proctor. The virtual proctor will watch you take the test on your computer.

What Are the Costs?

  • There is no fee for ACCUPLACER testing for National University students taking a test at a NU campus.
  • If you do not test at an NU campus, and require testing at campus (not an NU campus) you may be asked at that campus to pay a proctoring fee ranging from $15 to $60.
  • There is no fee for those who test with an Examity virtual proctor.

What Does Test Day Look Like?

A National University student ID number and valid government-issued photo ID will be needed. There is no time limit on tests and questions are in multiple choice format. Scratch paper (turned in and destroyed after testing) and pencil are allowed. A calculator is built into the software of the test. The results of the evaluation are immediate, provided to students, and are helpful for students beginning their studies.
